Summary: Lara's short time with Lana teaches her more about her son than she'd ever expected
Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san's idea to write a missing scene ficlet for each new episode. This is my offering for Blue
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary for the beta

Lara remained a picture of calm serenity as Lana scurried around fixing the tea. The girl was nervous, that much was obvious. She had already broken one cup in her rush to prepare things but Lara had maintained her serene countenance. Being the wife of Jor-El had taught her the art of aiding people to relax in situations outside the realm of their usual activities.

She smiled as Lana set down the teapot. “So, you’re a friend of my son?”

Lana blushed.

Oh, so that was it.

Lara smiled, frowning inwardly. Of course, she wanted Kal-El to fall in love. Everyone deserved that happiness, especially her son after everything he’d been through, but this Lana…there was something not quite right about her.

“Do you love my son?” she asked. Lara had no idea how long she was going to be here, especially with Zor-El on the loose. She needed to be sure her son was going to be happy with the person he had chosen.

“I…”

The hesitation was all Lara needed to nudge her to use her abilities. On Krypton, she had been mildly empathetic. Here under the yellow sun, she'd found she could read people just by looking at them. What she saw within Lana startled her.

“You have a deep darkness in you.”

At least the girl had the decency to look ashamed.

“It was my ex-husband,” Lana tried to explain. “He drove me to actions I didn’t even know I was capable of. I’ve done some terrible things and I’m not sure I can ever return to what was once my life.”

She didn’t want to. Lara could sense it. There was so much rage burning in the girl that it was a miracle the slight body could contain it. It was not simply for whatever injustice she believed unfairly dealt to her, it was more than that. It was a vicious, jealous rage. Lara could almost see it gleaming, an iridescent green.

On Krypton, if two men chose each other it was a cause for celebration and a thing to be marveled at. Lara had hoped that her son would find a strong man to bond with on Earth, one to support and protect him.

What Lara saw in this girl confirmed her deepest hopes. Kal-El was in love with a man. This girl’s ex-husband to be specific and that jealous rage seemed to be what was driving Lana.

This was not the girl for her son, although Lana clearly hadn’t reached this conclusion yet.

Once Zor-El had been dealt with, Lara was going to have a long talk with her son.

Go Lara, convince that son of yours to go for the gold! This really needs a sequel. :-D

Lovely...and wonderful look into what used to be Lana's soul. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary...this needs a sequel!

Love this section. Emphatic!Lara I can buy. It makes her more interesting, I think (and less weird for her to have picked up on Lana=bad in record speed).

as [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san says, above, you explain well how it was that lara caught right onto lana's darkness. that seemed odd to me when i watched the ep. i'd sure like it if lara patched up the clex!

Love Lara's insight into Lana and the CLex! Pity she wasn't the 'interfering' type who might have simply snapped Lana's neck to speed Clark and Lex's reconciliation along.

Oh, I so knew what that modification was going to be! :) I like how this ties in with Home Truths. Ficlet continuity FTW!

Thank you for filling in the blanks! That insight of Lara's about Lana just came out of the blue (no pun intended), didn't it? And Lana's behavior makes perfect sense in this scenario. Yes, you've done it again! :)

Is it all right to ask for a lot more of this? I mean like, a *lot* more! I like Lara here, I didn't much care for her on the show.

Wah-hey :) Awesome. I always imagined Lara would be so much smarter and cooler than she actually seemed to be in the ep. I like this little snippet, it's exactly the thing I would imagine her discovering. Well done :D
