Clark often wondered what his life would be like once he moved away from home. He just hadn’t expected to get a taste of it quite this soon. He looked out of the window again. The snow was still falling heavily and he could hear the wind howling through the barns. He shivered. For the first time he could think of, he felt alone.

It wasn’t his parents’ fault, of course, and he knew that. They’d gone out to do some last minute shopping and the snowstorm had left them trapped in town. They’d called to tell him it was just too dangerous for them to travel back but that they’d be home as soon as they could. He’d thought about using his powers of course, using his heat to melt the snow or just carrying them home using his superspeed. He knew they wouldn’t hear of it, though, so he didn’t mention it. He simply reassured them it was fine. But it was Christmas Eve, it was getting late and he had no one to talk to. He’d tried to call his friends but apparently the storm had knocked out the phone lines shortly after his parents had called. The TV also seemed to be out.

“May as well go to bed,” Clark said to himself. “Not much else to do.”

That was when the knock came at the door. Clark couldn’t be sure he’d heard it at first, but then the knocking came again, this time a little louder. Clark rushed to the door. Who on earth could be out in this weather? He flung open the door and gasped when he saw who was behind it. “Lex?”

Lex tried to smile, but evidently it was difficult when his teeth were chattering.

“H-hello C-Clark.”

Clark reacted quickly, pulling Lex inside and closing the door behind him. “What are you doing here? Wait, never mind, tell me later. We need to get you warmed up first.”

Lex was apparently too cold to argue because he didn’t say anything and merely let Clark lead him upstairs.

“These clothes will probably be a bit big for you but they’ll keep you warm. Just shout if you need anything.”

Lex managed a proper smile this time. “Thank you, Clark, I appreciate this.”

Clark smiled in return before closing the bathroom door so Lex could take a shower. He waited outside until he heard the water starting to run, slightly concerned that Lex was going to pass out from the cold. Who knew how long he’d been out in that snow? Clark didn’t want to think about it really. It was a miracle that Lex hadn’t wound up lost in the middle of nowhere. Lex was a survivor, Clark knew that, but he doubted even Lex could survive a night in the cold. He shook his head. Lex was safe, and here, and that was all that mattered. With another quick glance at the bathroom door, Clark went downstairs to put some more wood on the fire.

“Feeling better?” Clark asked as Lex padded down the stairs and took a seat next to him on the couch.

“Yes, thank you.”

“What were you doing outside in that storm anyway?” Clark asked.

Lex moved from the couch and sat in front of the fire, holding out his hands to warm them. “I was coming over to bring you your Christmas present. My car broke down about a mile down the road and I had to walk the rest of the way.”

“You know, one of these days I’m going to take all of your car keys away. You’re dangerous behind the wheel. I can’t believe you thought driving in this weather would be ok.”

Lex smiled good-naturedly and retook his seat on the couch. It was then that he noticed that Clark was alone. “Are your parents in bed?”

Clark shook his head. “They’re stuck in town. They called and said they were going to stay with the Browns’ until it was safe enough to drive back. See, unlike you, they know when not to drive.”

Lex grinned and then shivered. Clark frowned. “Are you still cold?”

Without waiting for an answer he fetched a blanket and wrapped it around Lex’s shoulders.

“I’m starting to think you’re my guardian angel, Clark.” Lex replied, smiling as he pulled the blanket tighter around his body.

Clark smiled shyly. “I just want you to be comfortable.”

What he didn’t say was that ever since he’d pulled Lex from the river and revived him, all he’d wanted to do was keep him safe. He’d never forget how pale and fragile Lex had looked, lying there, not breathing. He never wanted to see Lex like that again.

“I’m comfortable, Clark,” Lex said, bringing him back to their current conversation. “Snow aside, it’s nice to have some company. I’d have just been in the mansion by myself otherwise.”

“Yeah,” Clark agreed. “I was expecting to spend Christmas by myself this year too. I’m glad you’re here, Lex.”

“I’m glad I’m here too.”

The small clock on the mantle struck midnight. Lex smiled. “Merry Christmas, Clark.”

“Merry Christmas, Lex.”

Lex reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box, handing it to Clark. Clark beamed and ripped into the paper eagerly, causing Lex to chuckle.

“Wow,” Clark breathed as he opened the box. “Lex, this is amazing.”

It was a watch. Similar in style to the one Lex’s mother had given to her son, but instead of a coin on the face, it had an engraving that read ‘Clark, with love, Lex’

“I know punctuality isn’t your best friend,” Lex said. “I thought this might help.”

Clark was still focused on the words ‘with love’. Friendship, Clark told himself, that’s all it means. He leaned over and hugged Lex, holding on for longer than he should, but he couldn’t bring himself to let go. He smiled when he realised Lex wasn’t moving away either so they just stayed like that, holding each other and enjoying the warmth they were sharing. Finally, as reluctant as he was to do so, Clark pulled back

“I have a gift for you too.”

Hopping up from the couch, Clark went over to the tree, extracted one of the gifts from underneath it and rejoined Lex.

“Here. I hope you like it.”

Lex carefully removed the paper and smiled when he saw what was inside. A framed photo of him and Clark, arms around each others shoulders and big smiles on both of their faces. He remembered the day clearly. It had been during the summer at the Smallville annual gala and picnic. Chloe had been taking candid shots of the events for The Torch. He and Clark had been talking when Chloe had asked them if they would mind posing for a photo. He wanted to object but Clark had agreed before he could say anything. The feel of Clark’s arm around him had brought the smile immediately to his face and that was the moment Chloe had captured on camera.

Lex brushed his thumb over the two smiling faces beneath the glass. Happiness: the gift money couldn’t buy.

“Thank you, Clark,” he said softly, his eyes still fixed on the photo.

Clark had hoped Lex would like the photo. It was hard to know what to give someone who could afford to buy whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. He’d decided to go with something personal. Lex appeared to like it, except Clark noticed with alarm that there seemed to be tears in Lex’s eyes.

“Lex? Are you ok?”

Lex blinked and almost instantly the tears were gone. He gave Clark a reassuring smile. “Yeah, Clark, I’m fine. Just a bit tired I guess.”

Clark nodded. “It’s getting pretty late. The bed is made up in the spare room. You can use that.”

As Clark stood up Lex caught his hand to stop him. “Clark, I hope you know how much our friendship means to me.”

Clark’s heart tightened in his chest. This didn’t sound like it was going in a good direction. “Sure I do,” he replied, trying to keep his voice light.

Lex smiled. “Good. Do you mind if we stay here a bit longer?”

Clark didn’t argue, despite the fact that Lex had only just said he was tired. The truth was he didn’t want this night to end so without another word he sat back down.

“What does your family usually do at Christmas, Clark?” Lex asked.

Clark tried not to react when he realised Lex hadn’t let go of his hand and was now stroking it with his thumb. He probably didn’t even realise he was doing it.

“Well,” Clark said, trying to keep his voice steady. “My mom gets all the food ready during the day. Then just before midnight we go to church for the evening service. When we get back we each open one present and then we go to bed.”

He ran his fingers over the box that contained the watch.

Lex smiled. “That sounds nice. Christmas for me usually involves my dad inviting over some business contacts and their families so he can show off the expensive gifts his PA bought on his behalf.”

Clark wrapped an arm around Lex’s shoulders. “I hate your dad, Lex.”

“Not as much as I do, believe me, Clark.”

“I hate that he makes you unhappy.”

Lex turned to face Clark. “I’m not unhappy now.”

Clark nearly gasped. Something in Lex’s eyes was different. There was desire there, longing. His lips were slightly parted, begging to be kissed.

Praying he hadn’t misread the signal Clark dipped his head and placed a soft, gently kiss on Lex’s lips. Lex responded and it was like a bolt of electricity hitting his whole body. He deepened the kiss, pressing himself closer to Lex and slipping his tongue into his mouth, exploring and teasing.

“Oh, God, Clark,” Lex gasped. “Wanted this for so long.”

“Me too,” Clark whispered. “Want you.”

Lex pulled back and Clark almost whimpered at the loss of contact. Lex smiled, brushing his hand over Clark’s cheek.

“Lex, I-“ Clark began but was silenced by Lex’s finger on his lips

“We don’t have to do everything all at once, Clark.”

Clark smiled. It was as though Lex had read his mind. He knew he wanted Lex, and now he knew Lex wanted him but everything seemed to be happening so quickly and that scared him. He wanted everything to be perfect and he knew that when the time was right it would be. But right now he was happy to be here with Lex and hold him in his arms.

Lex tried to stifle a yawn.

“We should get some sleep,” Clark said softly, running his hands up and down Lex’s back.

“Mmm,” Lex agreed. “Don’t want to move though.”

Clark smiled. “We don’t have to.”

He manoeuvred them both so that he was laying full length on the couch and Lex was on top of him, his head tucked under Clark’s chin.

“Goodnight, Lex,” Clark said, pressing a kiss to the top of his head.

“Night, Clark,” Lex murmured.

And then they both slept, content smiles on their faces
