Thanks, as always, to
vichan for the beta!
“Lex?”
There was that voice. That sweet, soft voice that under normal circumstances would have sent shivers of pleasure down his spine. Unfortunately, the only shivering Lex was able to do now was the regular kind, brought about by the cold, metal bed he was currently strapped to.
He turned his head in the direction of the voice and smiled.
“Clark, I knew you’d come.”
He’d expected it sooner if he was honest, had almost wept when Clark had told him he couldn’t help him. But he’d known that eventually Clark would come to save him. It was what he did.
“Let’s get you out of here.”
Lex could only watch in amazement as Clark ripped the cage from the table as though it were made of paper and tossed it across the room. The one thing he’d clung to amidst his drug-induced insanity was what he’d seen Clark do to Edge’s car. All those theories and speculations he’d had about his friend over the years had been proved to him in a split second. It had hurt that Clark hadn’t been willing to trust him with his secret, but he supposed he could understand why. This was something so much bigger than anything he’d ever encountered before.
“All this time,” he breathed in awe as Clark worked on his restraints. “I was right about you.”
As the last restraint came free, Clark’s face suddenly creased in pain and he staggered backwards.
“What do you know? It worked!”
Lex moved to sit up so he could see what was happening but the next thing he knew blows were raining down on his body. He twisted, trying to get away from his attacker but he’d been lying in the same position for so long that his muscles didn’t want to move. He managed to curl himself into a ball. Where was Clark? What was happening? This was all wrong.
As suddenly as they’d started, the blows stopped. Lex tried to move. He needed to see what was happening. He managed, with some difficulty, to turn just in time to see Ian put something down Clark’s shirt. He didn’t know what it was but it was obviously hurting him. He could only watch in horror as Clark collapsed to the floor.
“What the hell are you doing to him?” Lex demanded.
Then Ian was in his face again, holding him by his shirt. He cursed the pain in his body and the weakness he felt. Clark needed him right now and he could barely move.
“Your buddy’s our first class ticket out of here,” Ian replied with a sneer.
“How do you plan to escape?” Lex asked with a sneer he hoped matched Ian’s. He may have been physically weak right now but he was still a Luthor and still a fighter. “I’m not giving you a cent. Clark is my friend.”
“Well, you ought to pick your friends better considering he didn’t tell you his little secret.”
Stars exploded behind his eyes and he felt his lip split, the warm blood running down his chin. When his vision cleared Ian and his twin were dragging Clark out of the room.
“No!” Lex called, desperately, ashamed of how weak his voice sounded. “Leave him alone!”
There was that sneer again. “Or you’ll do what, Mr Luthor? Considering they’re coming to fry your ass in about five minutes.”
“Leave him alone!”
His body protested but he ignored it. He had to move. Had to help Clark. Clark wouldn’t have even been here if he hadn’t come to save him. He managed to roll off the bed and onto the floor, biting back a scream when he hit. His ribs were probably broken and when he coughed blood spattered on the floor. None of that mattered, though. Only Clark did. He began to crawl, but his vision was staring to fade. He wouldn’t pass out, though, he couldn’t. Clark needed him. His body had other ideas, though, and as he lost consciousness his last thought was that he’d failed Clark.
* * *
When Lex woke up, Clark was still on his mind and he was pulling himself to his feet before his body could register just how much pain his was in.
“Clark? Clark!”
There was no sign of him or Ian. Lex lurched out of his room and staggered down the corridor. He had no idea how long he’d been unconscious but he had to hope he still had time to save his friend. He needed to think. Where would they have taken Clark? It would have to be somewhere out of the sights of the doctors and orderlies. At that thought, Lex quickened his pace as much as he was able. He wouldn’t do either of them any good if he got caught. His body was now screaming in pain but he wouldn’t stop. If only he could figure out where Clark was.
He rounded a corner and spotted the elevator. His heart soared. Ian had loaded Clark onto a gurney so he must have used the elevator to move him. If no one had used it since, and Lex had to hope they hadn’t, then he knew exactly where Clark was. He took the stairs to save time. He just prayed he wasn’t too late.
* * *
By the time he got to the basement his legs felt like jelly. He hadn’t realised just how many steps there were going to be. Still, he pressed on. He could hear voices now and that gave him hope. Ian had said that he needed Clark to help him escape. If he was still here then that had to mean Clark was here too.
He followed the voices until he found the source. It wasn’t just Ian. Eric was there too. They had Clark’s gurney wired up to the generator. He didn’t know exactly what they were planning on doing to him but he had to stop them. With a cry, he hurled himself at Eric, tackling him to the floor. Eric’s head hit the ground hard, stunning him. It gave Lex enough time to crawl over to Clark and pull himself to his knees. Clark’s head turned weakly towards him as he tried to focus his eyes.
“Lex?”
“Clark, what is it? What’s hurting you?”
Clark feebly attempted to lift his shirt. “The rock, Lex. Get it away from me, please.”
With his last ounce of strength Lex took the rock and threw it as hard as he could across the room.
“You just made a very serious mistake, Mr Luthor.”
Lex turned just in time to see Ian divide himself back into two. One of them walked over to the generator. “I guess since there’s no doctors around to fry your brain I’ll just have to do it myself.”
He removed one of the cables attached to the gurney and moved to make a step towards Lex. All of a sudden Clark was between them. “You really don’t want to hurt my friend again, Ian.”
His voice was cold, filled with anger. Ian took a step back. With the slightest swat of his hand Clark sent Ian flying across the room. The other Ian pulled Eric to his feet.
“What do we do now?”
Eric shrugged. “Run?”
As they made a break for it, Clark decided to let them go. They weren’t a threat now. Instead he hurried back to Lex and helped him to his feet. He didn’t know how Lex had managed to find him but he knew he owed Lex everything.
“Lex, thank you. You saved me.”
Lex gave him a weak smile. “Anything for you, Clark.”
Then his eyes rolled back and he collapsed into Clark’s arms.
“Lex!”
He had to get them out of there. Now. Take Lex somewhere safe while they worked out what to do next. He knew just the place. Somewhere Lionel would never think of looking. He lifted Lex into his arms and superspeeded out of Belle Reve, hoping he’d never have to set foot in that place again.
* * *
Clark resisted the urge to check Lex’s wounds again. He’s used his x-ray vision when they’d first arrived and discovered three cracked ribs as well a lot of serious bruising. As if Lex hadn’t been through enough already!
He’d done his best to make Lex comfortable and now there was nothing to do but wait for him to wake up.
Clark hated waiting. He’d managed to keep himself busy at first. He’d put Lex on the bed and ran to his parents‘, knowing that no one would be able to follow him at the speed he was travelling. His parents hadn’t been happy when he told them what he’d done, but they’d given him the food and blankets he’d requested and he’d assured them that he’d be back as soon as it was safe. He deliberately hadn’t told them where he and Lex were hiding so that his parents couldn’t be threatened or harmed.
When he got back he’d wrapped Lex in some blankets to keep him warm and had taken a seat beside the bed, waiting for him to wake up. He knew they’d have a lot to talk about once Lex was well enough. Not just what to do about Lionel but the fact that now Lex knew his secret. Clark hated to admit it but he was kind of glad that Lex had found out. The barrier between them was gone now and they could work on a true friendship that wasn’t based on lies. There was no question about trusting Lex now. Lex had risked his life to save him and that knowledge hurt Clark more than he could imagine. If he hadn’t run from Lex at Edge’s then he would never have been taken to Belle Reve in the first place. How do you apologise for abandoning someone you care about when they needed you the most?
“Clark?” Lex’s voice was dry and scratchy and he was looking at Clark through half open eyes.
“Lex! How are you feeling?”
Lex winced. “Like I got the crap beaten out of me. Where are we?”
“You remember Van? The guy who tried to shoot you? We’re at the hunting lodge where I found your picture on the wall. I didn’t think anyone would look for us here.”
He opened a bottle of water and held it to Lex’s lips. “You seem…” he didn’t want to use the word ‘crazy’ “Well, you seem better anyway.”
“Yeah, once I was away from whatever my dad was drugging me with I took a trip away from the land of the insane. Thank you for coming for me Clark.”
“Lex, I’m the one who should be thanking you. If you hadn’t gotten Eric away from me, I don’t know what would have happened.”
Lex reached and took Clark’s hand in his, squeezing it gently. “I told you, I’d do anything to protect my friends.”
Clark brushed his free hand over Lex’s cheek, skimming over the bruises that marked his face. “I’m sorry they hurt you, Lex.”
Then he leaned down and kissed him softly, pulling back suddenly when he realised what he’d done. “Oh, god. Lex, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I did that.”
Clark was surprised to see that far from looking disgusted Lex was smiling. “You did it because you wanted to. Or maybe because you knew I wanted you to.”
Clark looked puzzled. “You did?”
Lex chuckled, but stopped suddenly when the pain stabbed in his ribs. “Clark, I’ve been wanting you to do that since you pulled me out of the river that day. Now, I don’t suppose I could persuade you to do it again? Moving is a little difficult for me at the moment.”
Clark smiled and dipped his head down, pressing his lips to Lex’s and responding when Lex deepened the kiss. He slipped his tongue into Lex’s mouth, exploring the warmth he found there and letting out a small moan of pleasure as Lex’s tongue moved against his, massaging and teasing. Finally he had to pull back to allow Lex to breathe.
“Mmm,” Lex murmured with a content smile. “Getting locked up was almost worth it for that.”
Guilt stabbed in Clark’s chest. “Lex, I am so sorry for running away and leaving you. I don’t know how you can even look at me after what I did. I’m really sorry. I just panicked. I was scared.”
Lex brushed his thumb over Clark’s knuckles. “You don’t have to be scared any more, Clark. We can work through all of this, together. Everything will be ok, I promise.”
Clark had a feeling Lex was right. Now that they were together he doubted there was anything they couldn’t achieve.
