"I need to know that you love me. No matter what."
He wants to say the words but he can’t. The woman looking at him expectantly is not the woman he fell in love with. He doesn’t even recognize her anymore and that scares him. He’s known Lana his whole life. She was the sweet, innocent, perfect girl next door who only wanted to help people. He wonders if that Lana ever existed in the first place.
It feels like his world has ended.
“Clark?” Lana presses, placing a gentle hand on his arm. It makes Clark want to shiver.
“Clark, do you love me?”
He can’t say the words and Lana is starting to realize this. There is sadness in her eyes but also understanding.
“You never really loved me, did you?” She finally says. “You loved the image of me that exists in your head. That girl could never exist, Clark. No one is that perfect.”
He says nothing. He watches as she walks away from him. He knows she won’t be coming back.
“You know,” she says with a glance over her shoulder, “you’re more like Lex than you think. He wanted me to prove to himself that he was worthy of being loved. You wanted me to prove to yourself that you were capable of something normal.”
And then she’s gone.
Lex had been right about her. He’d been right about so many things, and Clark almost hated him that little bit more for seeing the things Clark had been blind to all along.
When you’re destined to save mankind, you’re destined to be alone.
Except he’s not alone and he never will be because Lex had been right about one other thing.
Funny thing about obsession is that it outlives everything. Even love.
Lex is always going to be there. Friends or enemies, it doesn’t matter, Lex is incapable of letting go and because of that; Clark will never truly be alone.
He finds it strangely comforting.
