The brain has a handy knack of not remembering pain so, when Clark was shot, it felt as if it were the first time. The pain was like nothing he’d ever felt before, but worse than the burning agony of a kryptonite bullet in his gut was the blank indifference in Lex's regard as Clark writhed on the floor.
He’d thought nothing could be worse than Lex hating him. Being ignored was so much worse than being hated. At least hatred meant that Lex felt something for him.
“Lex,” Clark gasped as his former friend began to leave the room. “Please, you have to help me.”
“Mr. President,” Brainiac insisted, just the faintest hint of a smirk curling at his lips. “It’s imperative that you leave now. Your safety depends on it.”
Clark recognised the veiled threat for what it was, but Lex seemed oblivious. Clark supposed that in this reality Lex had less of a reason to be mistrustful of people. After all, Clark hadn’t been there lying to him every step of the way.
“Sir!” A security guard burst into the room, his clothes torn and blood streaming from a cut above his eye. “It’s Miss Danvers. I don’t know why she’s doing it…we’ve got her restrained, but she’s attacking my men.
Brainiac rolled his eyes and handed the gun back to Lex. “Wait here. If he moves, kill him.”
As Braniac stormed out of the room, closely followed by the guard, Clark allowed his head to drop back onto the floor. He was getting weaker now, and he knew it wouldn’t be long before the kryptonite caused him to pass out. If that happened, he was dead.
“Lex,” he tried again. “You have to remember me.”
He heard the click as Lex cocked the gun. “If you don’t want a bullet in your head, I suggest you shut up. I’ve never seen you before in my life.”
He could feel the tears stinging in his eyes as he realised that this was useless. This version of Lex had never met Clark Kent and had no reason to believe anything he was saying.
“We could have been the stuff of legends…” Clark whispered as the world darkened around him.
* * *
“Hey! Wake up!”
A stinging slap to his cheek forced Clark to open his eyes, and he was surprised to find Lex’s blurred face hovering over him. “Wha? Lex?”
“What did you just say?” Lex demanded.
Clark blinked and tried to focus. His body was starting to go numb and he knew he only had a short time left. “I said your name.”
“No,” Lex snapped. “Before that. Just before you passed out you said something.”
It took Clark a moment to recall. Everything was a blur. “I said…I said we could have been the stuff of legends.”
Lex stared at him for a moment and then jumped to his feet, marched over to his desk and started rummaging through the drawers. Clark could only watch in confusion as Lex came back with a letter opener in his hand.
“What are you….”
He screamed as Lex plunged the letter opener into his stomach wound. It hurt even more than getting shot had, and the scream quickly faded from his lips as he lost consciousness again.
The next time he woke up, he found himself strangely devoid of any pain. Perhaps this was what it felt like to die.
“Are you back with me?”
Okay, so unless the Lex Luthor was the voice of God, he wasn’t dead. He pried open his eyes again and found Lex still kneeling beside him, his formerly pristine white suit spattered with red blood.
“What have you done?” Clark asked.
Lex cocked an amused eyebrow. “I saved your life. Don’t make me regret it.”
It took Clark a moment to process what he was hearing before he sat up and opened his shirt. The bullet hole was gone.
“I don’t understand. Why did you save me? You said yourself that you don’t even know me.”
Lex rose to his feet and extended a hand to Clark, who hesitated to take it. As grateful as he was to Lex for saving him, he couldn’t dismiss the fact that Lex was the one who'd shot him in the first place.
“If I'd wanted you to die, I wouldn’t have removed the bullet,” Lex pointed out.
Clark placed his hand in Lex’s and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet.
“I…I have these dreams,” Lex admitted when Clark looked at him questioningly. “I’m flying with someone and, even though I’m scared of heights, I don’t feel afraid. I know he won’t let me fall.”
“He?” Clark asked.
“I never see his face,” Lex explained. “Just flashes of blue and red, but the one thing he always says is that our friendship is going to be the stuff of legends.”
He stepped closer to Clark. “Do you believe a man can fly?”
“I think anything is possible, Lex,” Clark replied. “But it won’t be if you do what Milton Fine is pushing you to do. You have to realise he’s manipulating you.”
“I’m the president of the United States, Clark. No one manipulates me," Lex declared, stepping back and straightening up.
“Then don’t do this, Lex. Please don’t destroy the world. I know you. You’re not a mass murderer.” Clark closed the gap between them and took Lex’s hands in his. “Please.”
“Well,” Milton Fine said from the doorway, eyeing Clark and Lex with a mixture of amusement and disgust. “I see Miss Danvers’ diversion was enough for you to try to undo all my hard work.”
“What have you done to Kara?” Clark demanded, instinctively placing himself between Lex and Fine. “If you’ve hurt her….”
“I don’t think you’re in any position to make threats, Kal-El. Once the president activates the device and destroys our enemies, the planet will be plunged into a nuclear winter. It won’t be long before your powers fade and you die along with everyone else.”
“I won’t let that happen,” Lex announced, stepping out from behind Clark to face Fine. “I thought I was helping people, saving them, but you’ve just been using me for your own gains. You’re fired!”
Fine laughed, and it made Clark shiver. Right now, all he wanted to do was take Lex in his arms and run far away. He couldn’t, though…not until he knew Kara was safe.
“You honestly think that because I had plans for you that it makes you indispensible?”
He raised his hand and it split into three mechanical prongs, which embedded themselves in Lex’s head. Lex’s eyes widened in surprise as his body went rigid.
“NO!” Clark shouted, firing a blast of heat vision directly into Fine’s chest. The force alone caused the prongs to withdraw as Fine was propelled across the room, his charred body hitting the ground before dissolving into black liquid, which soaked into the carpet.
Clark caught Lex in his arms and gently lowered him to the floor. There were three small holes in Lex’s head, and blood was trickling from his eyes and ears.
“Lex?” Clark begged, his eyes burning with tears. “Lex, please don’t die.”
Lex blinked slowly and raised his eyes to meet Clark’s. “Guess…legend…ends…here.”
“No,” Clark said. “I can’t lose you. Not now.”
He dipped his head and pressed a soft kiss to Lex’s lips. “I love you.”
Lex smiled, then his eyes rolled back and he fell limp in Clark’s arms.
“NO! God, no! Lex!”
The world went white around him.
“Now you see, my son, what must be done,” Jor-El’s voice boomed out. “If you fail to stop the Brain Interactive Construct, then the world as you know it will perish. You will not be given another chance like this.”
With another flash, he was back in the barn.
“Clark!”
He felt Chloe’s arms around him before he even realised where he was.
“What happened?” Chloe asked. “You disappeared for just a second and then came back.”
A second? That was all it had been. He could still remember what it felt like holding Lex’s body in his arms. He pulled back.
“Chloe, is Lex still alive?”
“Unfortunately…unless some miraculous act of God has occurred in the last couple of seconds.”
It wasn’t too late. He could still get through to Lex. He’d done it once before, in more impossible circumstances than these, and he could do it again. First, he had to get rid of Brainiac. He could save Lana and Lex in one action. One he should have taken a long time ago.
“Chloe, I’m going to Krypton.”
The End.
